WORLD PREMIÈRE - Salto di Saffo

WORLD PREMIÈRE - TRAGOUDI

My double concerto for Kinan Azmeh clarinet, Eric Vloeimans trumpet & the Metropole Orchestra in Theater Carré, Amsterdam on June 8, 2018 - Save the Date!

The Syrian Big Band was the first of its kind in the Arab world and gave big band a voice in Syria. Working with the Metropole Orkest, soloists of the Syrian Big Band – most of them now living in the West – are playing an adventurous programme at Carré, packed with traditional repertoire and own energetic work. Versatile musicians such as ney player Moslem Rahal (who was at the 2016 festival with The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians), singer Dima Orsho, and singer and multi-instrumentalist Ibrahim Keivo are presenting their soulful sounds. Top clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Dutch trumpet player Eric Vloeimans are playing the world premiere of a double concerto for clarinet and trumpet: Tragoudi a new work by Greek-Dutch composer Calliope Tsoupaki, whose work is often inspired by traditional music from Greece and the Middle East.

About Tragoudi: A scala of hidden yet perceivable “titles” are thought of and referred to in this composition: Hidden Song, Forbidden Song, Lost Song, Last Song, In Memory of… , Sempre Viva, Forever Young, Song for my father, Secret Song….. These and so many more were the words which crossed my mind but everything felt misplaced. I just want to bring the quintessence of my love for song and melody very close to us, without any names, explanations or interpretations. After all I have chosen the simple word: TRAGOUDI, which means Song in Greek.
