Upcoming concerts “When I was 27”

“When I was 27”
For viola and double bass

viola: Heleen Hulst
Double bass: Dario Calderone

I wrote “When I Was 27” exactly as the title implies—when I was 27 years old, living on a houseboat during my first years in Amsterdam while studying composition at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
At that point in my “composer’s life,” I was overwhelmed by my own ideas, especially my love for early music, which fueled my inspiration during this period and remains an important influence in my work.
The viola and double bass morph into a giant viola da gamba fantasy instrument, resulting in a low-viola-high-bass fusion—a metaphorical self-reflection. There’s even a brief birthday song moment incorporated into the piece, a small gift to myself, since my birthday falls on May 27th.
